Taylor Series

What is it

A Taylor series is a generalisation of the Maclaurin series that approximates a function using its derivatives at any chosen point a, not just at x = 0, making it useful when you need an approximation centred somewhere other than the origin.

Why it matters

Taylor series are the mathematical tool behind local approximation throughout physics, engineering and numerical computing — whenever a complex function needs to be approximated near a specific operating point, this is the underlying technique.

Exam tip

Keep track of which point you're expanding around throughout the calculation — substituting into the wrong point, or mixing up Maclaurin (at 0) and Taylor (at a general point a), is the most common error in this topic.
