What is it
Numerical methods find approximate solutions to equations that can't be solved exactly, using techniques like the Newton-Raphson method and iteration, and estimating the area under a curve using the trapezium rule.
Why it matters
Most real-world equations, especially those modelling physical systems, can't be solved with a neat algebraic formula — numerical methods are how mathematicians, scientists and engineers actually solve them in practice.
Exam tip
When using the Newton-Raphson method, always check your starting value is reasonably close to the actual root by sketching or evaluating the function first — a poor starting point can cause the method to converge to the wrong root or fail entirely.
