What is it
At GCSE, databases build on the KS3 introduction to cover relational databases specifically — how tables link to each other through keys, and the basics of querying that data.
Why it matters
Real-world systems rarely store data in just one table — a school system needs separate tables for students, classes and grades, linked together. Understanding relationships between tables is understanding how real databases actually work.
Exam tip
Practice identifying primary keys and foreign keys in a two-table example — being able to explain how tables link together is tested more often than raw definitions.
