Properties of Materials

What is it

Children learn to compare and group everyday materials based on properties including hardness, solubility, transparency, conductivity (electrical and thermal), and response to magnets, and use this knowledge to explain why materials are chosen for particular uses.

Why it matters

Connecting a material's measurable properties to its real-world use is exactly the engineering-style thinking developed further in GCSE chemistry and physics.

Exam tip

When asked why a material is used for a specific job (e.g. 'why is the pan handle made of plastic'), always link the property directly to the use in one sentence — property alone or use alone rarely gets full marks.
