What is it

Students study the development of the atomic model, radioactive decay, types of radiation (alpha, beta, gamma) and their properties, half-life calculations, and uses and dangers of radioactivity.

Why it matters

This topic connects to real applications students may already know about — medical scans, radiotherapy, nuclear power — while also being one of the more mathematically distinct topics via half-life calculations.

Exam tip

Learn the relative penetrating power and range of alpha, beta and gamma radiation as a fixed comparison table — 'which type of radiation for which use' questions rely directly on this comparison.
