Systems Software

What is it

Systems software manages the computer itself rather than performing a task for the user directly — the operating system, utility programs, and device drivers that let application software run at all.

Why it matters

Every app you open depends on systems software working correctly underneath it. Understanding this layer explains why the same laptop can run Windows or Linux, and what an operating system is actually responsible for.

Exam tip

Be ready to list the specific functions of an operating system (memory management, user interface, security, file management) — 'what does an OS do' is a frequently repeated question style.
