Advanced Arithmetic
What is it
Advanced arithmetic at KS2 builds on early number skills to cover the four operations — addition, subtraction, multiplication and division — with larger numbers, including formal written methods like long multiplication and long division.
Why it matters
Fluency with the four operations by the end of KS2 is what SATs testers, and every maths topic afterwards, assume a child already has. Struggling with arithmetic makes every other topic — from fractions to algebra — feel harder than it needs to be.
Exam tip
Speed matters as much as accuracy in SATs — regular short bursts of practice (5–10 minutes a day) build the automatic recall that turns a two-minute calculation into a twenty-second one.
