Atoms, Elements and Compounds
What is it
Students learn that all substances are made of atoms, the difference between elements, compounds and mixtures, simple atomic structure (protons, neutrons, electrons), and how to represent substances using chemical symbols and formulae.
Why it matters
This vocabulary and model of matter is the foundation for every later chemistry topic, from the periodic table to chemical equations at GCSE.
Exam tip
Practise sorting example substances into element, compound or mixture — this classification is one of the most reliably tested skills on this topic.
