What is it
Students learn the structure and function of the human reproductive systems, the menstrual cycle, fertilisation, and the stages of human development from fertilisation through to birth, alongside plant reproduction and pollination in more depth than KS2.
Why it matters
This gives students an accurate, age-appropriate scientific understanding of reproduction and development, forming the basis for GCSE biology's more detailed treatment of hormones and inheritance.
Exam tip
Keep vocabulary precise (fertilisation vs conception vs gestation) — exam mark schemes are strict about using the correct scientific term rather than an everyday synonym.
