What is it

ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) is a statistical test for comparing the means of three or more groups simultaneously, determining whether at least one group differs significantly from the others.

Why it matters

ANOVA solves a genuine statistical problem: comparing multiple groups with repeated t-tests inflates the chance of a false positive, while ANOVA controls this error rate properly — making it essential for any experiment comparing more than two conditions.

Exam tip

Remember that a significant ANOVA result only tells you that some difference exists somewhere among the groups, not which specific groups differ — a follow-up post-hoc test is needed to identify exactly which pairs are significantly different.
