What is it
Deep learning is a subset of machine learning using neural networks with many layers to learn increasingly abstract representations of data — undergraduate study covers architectures like convolutional and recurrent networks, and the training process behind them (backpropagation, gradient descent).
Why it matters
Deep learning is responsible for most of the recent, highly visible breakthroughs in AI — image recognition, language models, and generative AI are all built on deep learning foundations, making it one of the most in-demand specialisations in computer science.
Exam tip
When a deep learning model performs poorly, systematically check for the common culprits in order: insufficient or poor-quality training data, an unsuitable architecture for the problem, and improperly tuned hyperparameters — jumping straight to architecture changes before ruling out data issues wastes significant time.
