Centres of Mass
What is it
The centre of mass is the single point where an object's entire mass can be considered to act — Further Mechanics covers finding the centre of mass of uniform shapes, composite bodies, and frameworks made of rods.
Why it matters
Centre of mass calculations are essential for real engineering problems involving stability and balance — from whether a loaded shelf will tip over to how a vehicle's weight distribution affects its handling.
Exam tip
Break composite shapes into simple standard shapes (rectangles, triangles, circles) with known centres of mass first, then combine them using a weighted average — attempting to find the centre of mass of a complex shape directly, without this decomposition, is far more error-prone.
