Circular Motion

What is it

Circular motion analyses objects moving in a circular path at constant speed, introducing centripetal acceleration and force (directed towards the centre) needed to keep an object moving in a circle rather than a straight line.

Why it matters

Circular motion explains everyday and engineering phenomena from why passengers feel pushed outward on a roundabout to how satellites stay in orbit — it's essential preparation for physics and engineering degrees.

Exam tip

Remember that centripetal force isn't a new, separate force — it's the resultant of the real forces already acting (tension, friction, gravity) that happens to point towards the centre. Trying to add an extra 'centripetal force' to a diagram is a common conceptual error.
