What is it

A matrix is a rectangular array of numbers used to represent and solve systems of linear equations, and to describe transformations — Further Maths covers matrix arithmetic, determinants, inverses, and solving simultaneous equations using matrix methods.

Why it matters

Matrices are the mathematical backbone of computer graphics, machine learning, engineering simulations, and economics — virtually any field that models multiple interacting quantities relies on matrix operations under the hood.

Exam tip

Always check that a matrix's determinant is non-zero before attempting to find its inverse — a zero determinant means the matrix has no inverse, and exam questions specifically test whether you check this before diving into calculation.
