Polar Coordinates

What is it

Polar coordinates describe a point's position using a distance from the origin (r) and an angle from a fixed direction (θ), rather than horizontal and vertical distances — useful for curves with circular or spiral symmetry.

Why it matters

Some curves (like spirals and roses) have far simpler equations in polar form than in Cartesian form, making polar coordinates the natural choice for a range of physics and engineering problems involving rotational symmetry.

Exam tip

Sketch the curve as r changes with θ in stages (e.g. what happens as θ goes from 0 to π/2, then π/2 to π) rather than trying to visualise the whole curve at once — this systematic approach prevents sketching errors on unfamiliar polar curves.
