What is it
Mathematical proof at A-Level covers proof by deduction, proof by exhaustion, and disproof by counter-example — formally demonstrating that a mathematical statement is always true (or finding the single case that shows it isn't).
Why it matters
Proof is the skill that separates 'this seems to work' from 'this is guaranteed to always work' — a mode of thinking that's central to all of pure mathematics and directly assessed in a dedicated section of every A-Level Maths paper.
Exam tip
For proof questions, write your reasoning as complete, connected mathematical sentences rather than isolated lines of algebra — examiners are marking whether your logic follows step to step, not just whether the final line is correct.
