KS1 (Years 1–2) · Science
Animals Including Humans
What is it
Children learn to identify a variety of common animals — fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals — including pets, and to describe and compare their structure, noting that humans are animals too.
Why it matters
Sorting animals into groups by their features is a child's first taste of scientific classification, a skill that reappears in every science subject right up to GCSE and beyond.
Exam tip
Learn one clear example of each animal group (fish, amphibian, reptile, bird, mammal) so questions asking 'which group does this belong to' are quick and confident.
