Algebra Introduction

What is it

Introductory algebra at KS2 means using letters or symbols to represent unknown numbers in simple expressions and equations, and finding missing numbers in number sequences and simple formulae.

Why it matters

This is a child's first taste of the abstract thinking that dominates GCSE and A-Level maths — starting gently now, with concrete examples, prevents algebra feeling like an alien topic when it's introduced formally at KS3.

Exam tip

Frame early algebra as a 'missing number puzzle' rather than using the word 'algebra' too heavily at first — it keeps the topic feeling approachable rather than intimidating.
