Financial Mathematics

What is it

Financial mathematics covers real-world money calculations — percentage increases and decreases, simple and compound interest, profit and loss, and best-value comparisons between different offers.

Why it matters

This is maths a student will use for the rest of their life — understanding compound interest alone can be the difference between good and poor financial decisions well into adulthood.

Exam tip

For compound interest, remember it multiplies the balance by the same growth factor each year rather than just adding the same amount — mixing this up with simple interest is the single most common error in this topic.
