What is it
Sequences are ordered lists of numbers following a rule — covering arithmetic sequences (constant difference), and finding both term-to-term rules and the nth term formula that generates any term directly.
Why it matters
Finding the nth term formula is genuine algebraic reasoning in action — spotting the pattern and generalising it is exactly the kind of thinking rewarded throughout GCSE and beyond.
Exam tip
For a linear sequence, the coefficient of n in the nth term formula is always the common difference between terms — spotting this shortcut saves significant time compared to trial and error.
