Why it matters
The difference between an interesting idea and a genuine research contribution lies almost entirely in methodology — rigorous experimental design, honest reporting of negative results, and careful comparison against real baselines — and mastering this process is what postgraduate research training is fundamentally about.
Exam tip
Before running any experiment, write down in advance exactly what result would support your hypothesis and what result would contradict it — deciding this after seeing the results is one of the most common and damaging sources of unintentional bias in research findings.
