Natural Language Processing

What is it

Postgraduate natural language processing covers the theoretical and computational linguistics foundations behind modern language technology, alongside current research directions — including model interpretability, multilingual and low-resource NLP, and the open challenges in reasoning and factual reliability of language models.

Why it matters

Understanding NLP at a research level requires engaging with genuinely unresolved problems — why large language models fail at certain reasoning tasks, how to make them reliable for low-resource languages, and how to evaluate them meaningfully — rather than just applying pretrained models to standard tasks.

Exam tip

When evaluating an NLP research claim, check what benchmark was used and whether that benchmark has known weaknesses or contamination issues — a substantial fraction of reported state-of-the-art results in NLP research have later been shown to be inflated by benchmark-specific artefacts rather than genuine capability gains.
