AI Agents
What is it
An AI agent is a system that perceives its environment, makes decisions, and takes actions autonomously to achieve a goal — undergraduate study covers agent architectures, planning, and how modern AI agents combine large language models with tools and memory to complete multi-step tasks.
Why it matters
AI agents represent the frontier of applying AI beyond single-step question answering to genuinely autonomous task completion — software development, research, and business automation are increasingly built around agent-based systems, making this a rapidly growing and highly relevant area.
Exam tip
When designing or analysing an AI agent, clearly separate its perception, reasoning, and action components — conflating these stages is a common source of confusion, and understanding each piece separately makes it much easier to diagnose why an agent fails at a particular task.
