What is it
DevOps covers the practices and culture that bring software development and IT operations together — including continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD), infrastructure automation, containerisation, and monitoring production systems.
Why it matters
Modern software isn't just written once and shipped — it's continuously built, tested, deployed, and monitored, and DevOps practices are what make that continuous cycle fast and reliable rather than a manual, error-prone process repeated by hand every time.
Exam tip
When explaining CI/CD, be precise about the distinction: continuous integration means automatically building and testing code on every change, while continuous deployment means automatically releasing that code to production — conflating the two is a common source of confusion in interviews and exams alike.
