What is it
The divergence theorem relates the flow of a vector field out through a closed surface to the divergence of that field integrated over the volume enclosed by the surface, converting a surface integral into a volume integral.
Why it matters
The divergence theorem is fundamental to physics and engineering wherever flow and conservation matter — fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and electromagnetism all use it to relate what happens at a boundary to what happens throughout a region.
Exam tip
When a vector field is complicated but its divergence simplifies neatly, converting a surface integral into a volume integral via the divergence theorem is almost always the faster route — always check the divergence first before committing to a direct surface integral.
