What is it

A Fourier series expresses a periodic function as an infinite sum of sines and cosines of different frequencies, allowing complex periodic signals to be broken down into simple, well-understood wave components.

Why it matters

Fourier series are the mathematical foundation of signal processing, audio and image compression, and solving PDEs like the heat equation — the idea of decomposing something complex into simple frequency components is used throughout modern technology.

Exam tip

Check whether the function has any obvious symmetry (odd or even) before calculating the Fourier coefficients — symmetric functions have either all sine terms or all cosine terms vanish automatically, cutting the calculation work roughly in half.
