Numerical Analysis

What is it

Engineering numerical analysis applies numerical methods specifically to engineering problems — solving systems of equations, differential equations, and optimisation problems that arise in real design and simulation work, often using dedicated software.

Why it matters

Nearly all modern engineering design relies on numerical analysis running inside simulation software — from stress analysis in structures to airflow simulation in aerodynamics, these tools implement exactly the numerical techniques studied here.

Exam tip

Always consider the trade-off between accuracy and computational cost when choosing a numerical method — a more accurate method is not automatically the right choice if it takes prohibitively long to run on a large, real engineering problem.
