Partial Differentiation
What is it
A partial derivative measures how a multivariable function changes with respect to one variable while holding all other variables constant, denoted ∂f/∂x for the partial derivative with respect to x.
Why it matters
Partial derivatives are the building blocks of gradient-based optimisation used throughout machine learning and economics — training a neural network, for instance, relies entirely on computing partial derivatives with respect to thousands of parameters at once.
Exam tip
When taking a partial derivative with respect to x, treat every other variable as if it were a constant number — this single mental shift is what makes partial differentiation feel like ordinary differentiation rather than something new.
