What is it

Multivariable calculus extends differentiation and integration to functions of more than one variable, such as f(x, y), where the output depends on multiple inputs changing simultaneously.

Why it matters

Almost every real-world quantity depends on more than one variable — temperature depends on location and time, profit depends on price and quantity — making multivariable calculus essential for physics, economics, engineering, and machine learning.

Exam tip

When visualising a multivariable function, think of it as a surface rather than a curve — sketching cross-sections (holding one variable constant) is often the fastest way to build intuition for how the function behaves.
