What is it

Queuing theory mathematically models waiting lines — analysing arrival rates, service rates, and the number of servers to predict metrics like average wait time and queue length, often using probability distributions like the Poisson distribution.

Why it matters

Queuing theory is used to design real systems people interact with daily — call centre staffing, hospital emergency rooms, checkout counters, and network traffic all rely on these models to balance service quality against cost.

Exam tip

Identify which standard queuing model applies (like M/M/1 for a single server) before reaching for a formula — using the formula for the wrong queue configuration is the most common error, since each model's formulas aren't interchangeable.
