Real Analysis

What is it

Real analysis rigorously re-examines the foundations of calculus — limits, continuity, differentiation, and integration — using precise epsilon-delta definitions and formal proofs rather than the intuitive treatment given at A-Level.

Why it matters

Real analysis is where mathematics students learn to write genuinely rigorous proofs for the first time, moving from 'this seems true' to 'this is provably true' — a shift in thinking that's foundational for all further pure mathematics.

Exam tip

When writing an epsilon-delta proof, work backwards from what you need to show to figure out how to choose delta, then write the proof forwards for the final answer — attempting to write the proof in the same order you think through it often obscures the logic.
