What is it
A ring is a set with two operations (typically called addition and multiplication) that generalises the algebraic structure of integers, satisfying axioms that allow addition to always be reversed but multiplication only sometimes to be.
Why it matters
Ring theory generalises arithmetic itself, revealing why certain familiar number properties (like unique factorisation) hold in some number systems but fail in others — a subtlety with genuine consequences for cryptography and coding theory.
Exam tip
Always check whether a ring has multiplicative inverses before assuming you can 'divide' — unlike ordinary numbers, most rings don't allow division, and assuming otherwise is the most common conceptual slip when starting ring theory.
