Statistical Modelling
What is it
Statistical modelling builds mathematical representations of real-world processes using data, choosing a model structure (like linear, logistic, or time series) that captures the key relationships while acknowledging remaining uncertainty.
Why it matters
Statistical models are how data becomes decision-useful — insurance pricing, medical risk prediction, and business forecasting all depend on building models that balance simplicity, accuracy, and interpretability for a specific real purpose.
Exam tip
Always start with the simplest model that could plausibly explain the data before adding complexity — a simple model that's well understood is usually more useful and trustworthy than a complex one that's poorly understood, even if the complex one fits marginally better.
