What is it

Tensor calculus generalises vectors and matrices to higher-dimensional mathematical objects called tensors, providing a framework for describing physical quantities that depend on multiple directions simultaneously, like stress within a material.

Why it matters

Tensor calculus is essential for advanced engineering fields like continuum mechanics and structural engineering, where quantities like stress and strain within a material genuinely require more than a simple vector to describe fully.

Exam tip

Get comfortable with index notation (like Tᵢⱼ) before tackling tensor calculations directly — the notation looks intimidating at first, but it's simply a systematic way of tracking multiple directions at once, and fluency with it makes the underlying calculations far more manageable.
