What is it

The transportation problem finds the cheapest way to move goods from several supply points to several demand points, given the cost of shipping between each pair, using specialised techniques faster than general linear programming.

Why it matters

This is genuinely applied logistics mathematics — the same structure describes real supply chain and distribution problems, and the specialised solution methods scale to problems far larger than general linear programming could handle efficiently.

Exam tip

Always check that total supply equals total demand before applying the standard transportation algorithm — an imbalance needs a dummy supply or demand point added first, and skipping this step is a common setup error.
