What is it

A moment is the turning effect of a force about a pivot point, calculated as force × perpendicular distance from the pivot — used to analyse objects in rotational equilibrium, like a balanced see-saw or a ladder leaning against a wall.

Why it matters

Moments extend mechanics beyond objects moving in a straight line to objects that can rotate or tip over, which is essential for realistic problems involving beams, ladders, and any extended (non-point) object.

Exam tip

Always choose the pivot point strategically — picking a point where an unknown force acts eliminates it from the moments equation entirely, often turning a complex problem into a simple one-step calculation.
