What is it

Projectile motion analyses an object launched into the air under gravity alone, by treating the horizontal and vertical components of motion completely independently — horizontal motion at constant velocity, vertical motion under constant acceleration.

Why it matters

Projectile motion is the classic application that ties together kinematics, vectors and trigonometry into one coherent real-world problem — understanding it deeply makes every other 2D mechanics topic more intuitive.

Exam tip

Always split the initial velocity into horizontal and vertical components using trigonometry before doing anything else — attempting to work with the resultant velocity directly, rather than its components, is the most common projectile motion mistake.
