Bonding, Structure and Properties
What is it
Students learn the three types of chemical bonding (ionic, covalent, metallic), how bonding relates to structure (giant ionic lattices, simple molecules, giant covalent structures, metallic structures), and how structure explains physical properties like melting point and conductivity.
Why it matters
This is one of the highest-weighted and most conceptually demanding GCSE chemistry topics — 'explain the property from the structure' questions are a defining feature of the higher-tier paper.
Exam tip
For any 'explain why X has a high melting point / conducts electricity' question, always describe the bonding AND the structure together — an answer naming only the bond type rarely gets full marks.
