KS4 / GCSE · Chemistry
Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table
What is it
This topic covers atomic structure (protons, neutrons, electrons, isotopes), electronic configuration, the historical development of the atomic model, and how the modern periodic table is arranged by proton number into groups and periods.
Why it matters
This is the required opening topic for GCSE chemistry across every exam board, and its model of the atom underpins every later topic — from bonding to radioactivity.
Exam tip
Practise writing electronic configurations (e.g. 2,8,1 for sodium) confidently — this single skill is needed again and again to explain bonding and reactivity trends across the whole course.
