Multiplication & Division

What is it

Early multiplication and division introduce the idea of equal groups — sharing objects fairly (division) and combining equal groups (multiplication) — usually through the 2, 5 and 10 times tables first.

Why it matters

Multiplication and division are addition and subtraction in disguise, done repeatedly and efficiently. Getting comfortable with the concept of 'equal groups' now makes times tables feel logical rather than like lists to memorise.

Exam tip

Use everyday moments — sharing biscuits between friends, or counting socks in pairs — to show division and multiplication happening naturally, before introducing the written symbols.
