What is it
At KS1, fractions start simply: recognising and finding half and a quarter of shapes, objects and small numbers of items — the first step towards understanding that numbers can represent parts of a whole.
Why it matters
Fractions are famously one of the trickiest topics for children later on, and that difficulty often traces back to a shaky start. A confident, visual understanding of 'half' and 'quarter' now pays off enormously by KS2 and GCSE.
Exam tip
Cutting real food — an apple, a sandwich, a pizza — into halves and quarters makes the idea concrete in a way worksheets alone rarely achieve.
