Living Things and Habitats
What is it
Building on KS1, children learn to classify living things into broad groups (plants, animals, and further into vertebrates/invertebrates), use classification keys, and explain how environmental changes can affect the animals and plants living in a habitat.
Why it matters
This is a child's first structured system for classifying the living world — the same logical, key-based thinking used by real biologists to identify species — and it sets up food chains and ecosystems studied later.
Exam tip
Practise using a simple yes/no classification key to identify an unfamiliar creature — these appear often and reward careful, step-by-step reading rather than guessing.
