What is it

Advanced statistics covers the theoretical foundations of statistical inference in depth — including estimator properties (bias, consistency, efficiency), asymptotic theory, and the mathematical justification behind widely used statistical procedures.

Why it matters

Understanding the theory behind statistical methods — not just how to apply them — is what allows a researcher to recognise when a standard technique's assumptions are violated, and to develop or adapt methods for genuinely novel research problems.

Exam tip

When proving properties of an estimator (like unbiasedness or consistency), be explicit about which assumptions on the underlying distribution are actually being used — many proofs subtly rely on conditions like finite variance that are easy to overlook when working quickly.
