Functional Analysis

What is it

Functional analysis studies infinite-dimensional vector spaces of functions, equipped with structures like norms and inner products, extending the ideas of linear algebra and analysis to spaces where 'vectors' are themselves functions.

Why it matters

Functional analysis provides the rigorous mathematical foundation for quantum mechanics, signal processing, and the theory behind many machine learning methods — anywhere an infinite-dimensional space of functions needs to be reasoned about with the same precision as ordinary vectors.

Exam tip
