What is it

A first order ordinary differential equation (ODE) involves a function and its first derivative — undergraduate study covers solving these using separation of variables, integrating factors, and other systematic techniques.

Why it matters

First order ODEs model an enormous range of real change — population growth, radioactive decay, cooling, simple circuits — making them one of the most immediately applicable topics in the entire undergraduate mathematics curriculum.

Exam tip

Before choosing a solution method, check whether the equation is separable (variables can be split onto each side) — it's the simplest technique, and trying it first before more complex methods like integrating factors saves significant time.
