Higher Order ODE
What is it
Higher order ODEs involve second or higher derivatives of a function — undergraduate study extends the second-order techniques from Further Maths to more general cases, including systems of coupled differential equations.
Why it matters
Higher order and coupled ODEs model complex real-world systems where several quantities change and interact simultaneously — from multi-component mechanical systems to chemical reaction networks and epidemiological models.
Exam tip
When converting a higher order ODE into a system of first order equations (a standard technique), introduce a new variable for each derivative below the highest order — keeping this substitution organised and labelled prevents errors when the system grows large.
