Group Theory
What is it
A group is a set with a single operation that satisfies four specific axioms (closure, associativity, identity, and inverses) — group theory studies the properties and classification of these structures.
Why it matters
Group theory formally describes symmetry, making it essential to chemistry (molecular structure), physics (particle physics and conservation laws), and cryptography — Rubik's Cube solving algorithms are, mathematically, an application of group theory.
Exam tip
When first working with an unfamiliar group, write out its full operation table if it's small enough — seeing the complete structure laid out makes properties like identity, inverses, and commutativity immediately visible rather than abstract.
