Inferential Statistics

What is it

Inferential statistics uses data from a sample to draw conclusions and make predictions about a larger population, covering confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, and the uncertainty inherent in generalising from limited data.

Why it matters

Almost no real-world question can be answered by measuring an entire population — inferential statistics is what allows conclusions from a manageable sample to be extended, with quantified confidence, to the full population of interest.

Exam tip

Always report the uncertainty alongside a conclusion — a confidence interval or margin of error, not just a single point estimate — since a claim without quantified uncertainty is incomplete inferential statistics, not a complete answer.
