Z-Transforms

What is it

The Z-transform is the discrete-time equivalent of the Laplace transform, converting sequences of discrete values (rather than continuous functions) into a function of a complex variable, used to analyse digital systems.

Why it matters

Z-transforms are essential for digital signal processing and digital control systems — anywhere a computer processes signals in discrete time steps rather than continuously, this is the mathematical tool used to analyse and design the system.

Exam tip

Keep clear which domain you're working in — time domain (sequences) versus Z-domain (transformed) — mixing the two is the most common source of confusion, since operations that are simple in one domain (like multiplication) can look completely different in the other.
