Fourier Transforms
What is it
A Fourier transform converts a function of time into a function of frequency, revealing which frequencies make up a signal — a generalisation of the Fourier series to signals that aren't necessarily periodic.
Why it matters
Fourier transforms are the mathematical foundation of nearly all modern signal processing — audio compression, image processing, and telecommunications all rely on converting between the time domain and frequency domain using exactly this tool.
Exam tip
Build intuition for what the transform represents before diving into calculation — thinking of the Fourier transform as answering 'how much of each frequency is present' makes interpreting the result far more meaningful than treating it as pure algebra.
